I shivered as the breeze picked up. Leaves, small twigs, pine needles and other debris fluttered passed the exposed skin of my shins. The small stings I endured as they gazed my cut skin were mere distractions. I kept my eyes locked on the cabin in front of me. My husband was pacing inside our vacation home, biting his thumbnail. He was nervous.
The whole purpose was for us to come up here and rekindle the romance. Or so I had thought. My husband had other plans. He knew about my affair with our best friend. He knew that I loved Liam more than I could ever love him, and he couldn’t have that. To Brandon, I was one of his play things. I was something he had lusted after for so long. To me, he was something solid and reliable. I married him because I was lonely, and I knew I had to move on from Liam.
I never expected nor did I plan on Liam coming back to me. Begging me, forcing me to feel the love we once shared.
I watched as Brandon ripped open the front door. The steam from his breath circled around him, his feet crunched in the snow.
“Elise!” he shouted.
I cowered behind the tree, wishing I could somehow blend in. That I could just disappeared. If Brandon didn’t want me anymore that was fine. I didn’t need his money, which was not why we got married. In fact I was the one who wanted a prenuptial. He was the one who declined.
“I know you are out here.” His voice was getting closer. When I heard him near me I held my breath to ensure the steam from my breathing couldn’t be seen. I heard his footsteps crunch louder and louder in the snow the closer he got. One step, two, three, four then he stopped. He sucked in a breath.
“Baby.” He said in softer tone. “I know you are around here somewhere. Please come out.”
I heard the clicking of something, a gun? I pressed my mouth against the curve of my elbow and sucked in a breath. Covering my mouth with the other hand I let it out slowly. All the while keeping my eyes on his darkened frame.
“I know that we can still work this out.” He murmured.
My heart hammered inside of my chest. I shivered harder, my hands were shaking uncontrollably now. I knew the shock was kicking in. The blood around my hair line had frozen, or maybe I ran out of blood. I closed my eyes, still keeping my mouth inside of my elbow. Hot streams of tears rolled down my face.
I was so petrified, and frozen that if he found me now I’d let him do whatever he wanted to me. I’d let him take me back into that house, beat me, make me perform sexual acts with him, whatever. I just didn’t have it in me to fight anymore. I was the reason for all this. I made Brandon this way.
“There you are.” He said lowering himself to me.
My eyes popped open. His handsome face was covered in both our blood from where I had struck him. I sobbed a little and flinched when he reached a hand out to me. He ran his fingers lightly over my bruised cheek. “I’m sorry.” He said softly. “I shouldn’t have hit you.”
I sobbed again.
“Elise, we got off on a bad foot.” He said rising to his full height. I watched his shadow move, something catching the light as it twirled and then my head hit the back of the tree.
My face was on fire, warmth spilled from my nose and everything went black.
